FAQ

SPECIFIC PROPERTIES
What makes SWISSDENT different to standard toothpastes?
In addition to gentle tooth cleaning with natural enzymes, the tooth is treated to a mild bleaching with the help of the latest nanotechnology.

What is bleaching?
Bleaching is the lightening of colour pigments (in the tooth) through the use of active oxygen (peroxide).

How does the SWISSDENT bleaching work?
It’s based on the SWISSDENT Nanowhitening formula: tiny calcium peroxideparticles are deposited in the irregularities of the tooth’s surface and release oxygen. This oxidises with the colour pigments in the tooth, causing them to lose their colouring properties.

What is nano(technology)?
It is the use of very small particles: a nanometre is the billionth part of a metre. The smaller an active ingredient is, the better it can reach the place where it needs to work.

What is Nanoxyd®?
It is bioavailable calcium peroxide in nano size – an extremely effectivebleaching agent: Calcium ensures better adhesion to the tooth enamel. Nano particles have a minute volume but a large surface area, which means they are much more effective. In addition, they are so small that they can better enter the cracks in the tooth enamel.

What is the difference between EXTREME and NANOWHITENING?
EXTREME is especially designed for teeth which are badly stained by tobacco, but is also ideal for coffee and red wine drinkers.

What does MOUNTAINFRESH do?
MOUNTAINFRESH has no bleaching effect. It removes plaque like any standard toothpaste. In addition, it gives fresh breath and, thanks to its high fluoridecontent, provides excellent protection against caries. (Caries = toothdecay: bacterial acids dissolve the minerals in the teeth, until a cavity is formed.).

TOLERABILITY
Does the bleaching agent in SWISSDENT attack the gums?
No, because the quantity of Nanoxyd® is far too low (0.1%).

Are there any side effects?
Allergies can occur in isolated cases – as with any other toothpaste. Therefore, if you suffer from allergies, you should check the ingredients carefully before use.

Can you use SWISSDENT if you have crowns or bridges?
SWISSDENT only lightens the colour pigments on the porcelain orcomposite resin, but not the basic colour of the crowns or bridges themselves.

Is it possible that only part of a tooth or a row of teeth may be lightened?
With artificial tooth parts, only the colour pigments attached to the prosthesis will be lightened, and not the prosthesis itself. Your own tooth enamel will also becomelighter. This can lead to uneven results.

Does SWISSDENT attack alloys or inlays (gold/ porcelain/ composite resin)?
No, these are not affected by the use of SWISSDENT.

Can I use SWISSDENT if I have gum disease?
With gum disease (periodontosis), the gums have receded, leaving the tooth neck, which is made of dentine, exposed. The dentine reacts sensitively to hot andcold, as well as to air and acids. Like any other bleaching process, SWISSDENTcan also increase this sensitivity. The advantage of SWISSDENT is its very low concentration of Nanoxyd® (0.1%),which means that the risk of sensitising the dentine is low.

Can I use NANOWHITENING or EXTREME if I already have white teeth?
Yes, you can. With its gentlepolishing effect, it protects against new discolouration.

Are SWISSDENT toothpastes harmful to children?
Since there is a risk that children may swallow large quantities of toothpaste and thus take in too much fluoride, the same recommendation applies to SWISSDENT as to any other toothpaste: it should only be used by children over the age of 6.Children under that age should use specially formulated children’s toothpaste.

USE
For how long and how often can I use EXTREME and NANOWHITENING?
Just like any other toothpaste - every day. It is recommended that you brush your teeth for at least two minutes at a time, three times a day. For best bleaching results, SWISSDENT should not be rinsed out of the mouth after brushing before bed. In thisway the Nanoxyd® can work through the night.

How fast will I see results?
After around 3-4 weeks. If, for some reason, it takes longer, get in touch with SWISSDENT or speak to your dentist.

Can I use SWISSDENT with an electric toothbrush?
Yes, without a problem.

ABRASIVENESS & CLEANING EFFECT
Are SWISSDENT toothpastes harmful to tooth enamel?
SWISSDENT is completely harmless to tooth enamel because natural enzymes areused for gentle tooth cleaning. With most toothpastes, coarse scouring agents are used, which can damage the enamel.

What are the effects of the enzymes from pineapple (bromelain) and papaya (papain) which are contained in EXTREME and NANOWHITENING?
They help to gently dissolve plaque, leaving the road clear for the bleaching agent,Nanoxyd® which can then reach the tooth surface.

What are the silicates contained in EXTREME and NANOWHITENING and how do they work?
Silicates are natural minerals. They are used to polish the surface of the tooth.Whatdoes the RDA tell me about a toothpaste? The term Radioactive DentinAbrasion is used to describe the scale of the abrasiveness of the cleaning agents on the dentine. SWISSDENT toothpastes have a very low RDA in comparison with other toothpastes.

SPECIAL INGREDIENTS
What does coenzyme Q10 do?
It reduces the risk of gum inflammations and helps to prevent the formation of deeper periodontal pockets.

What do the glacier water minerals in MOUNTAINFRESH do?
They assist the remineralisation of the tooth - for example after an acid attack (see previous answer).

What do the methyl parabens contained in SWISSDENT do?
They are a preservative. How does the menthol in SWISSDENT react with homeopathic substances?
Menthol is an ethereal oil which can reduce the effect of homeopathic medicines. You should therefore consult your doctor before use.

What is the baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) in EXTREME and what is it for?
It neutralises aggressive acids and gently polishes the surface of the tooth.

What effect does the Vitamin E in SWISSDENT have?
Vitamin E helps to keep the gums healthy by reducing free radicals which promoteinflammations, and thus assists the healing mechanism.

What does the fluoride in SWISSDENT do?
Fluoride hardens the tooth enamel and protects against caries.
